The trifluromethyl group is of themost stable structures known, being inert towards practically alloxidizing, reducing, and hydrolyzing conditions. Although a strongorganic acid, trifluoroacetic acid is considerably weaker thanstrong inorganic acids. The use of trifluoroacetic acid as anolefin hydration promoter permits the synthesis of alcohols fromolefins which are polymerized, oxidized, or otherwise decomposed bysulfuric acid. A wide range of reactions are promoted bytrifluroacetic acid including esterifications, condensations, andoxidations. Its advantages over the usual acid catalysts aresmoother reaction and less decomposition. TFA also offers easyhandling and recovery in these applications.
